Greenpath Lawncare offers seasonal spring cleanup and fall cleanup of your landscaping. Lawn weeds can be one of the more troubling aspects of lawn care. Most weeds are opportunistic and will take advantage of any weakness in the turf. Thinner areas of grass, grass that is mowed too short and even infertile soil make perfect opportunities for weeds to grow. Weeds compete with turfgrass for space, nutrients and water. Many weeds grow much faster than turfgrass and can quickly get out of control if measures are not taken to stop them. At the very least, they detract from the quality and appearance of your lawn.

The conditions that allowed for weeds to flourish must be corrected or they will continually be a problem. Lawns must be maintained in a way that promotes a healthy lawn, while discouraging lawn weeds. There are many ways to accomplish this. Some types of grasses can be overseeded to thicken the turf. You should develop a sound fertilization program based on the needs and use of the grass. It is also important to mow the lawn at the highest recommended level. This is especially important for cool season grasses. These tactics will hinder weed germination and growth since most weeds cannot compete easily with a thick lawn.

Weed Control should be applied concurrently with fertilizing. Early fall is a good time to control winter annual and perennial broadleaf weeds, while spring is the best time for summer annual weeds. Apply when soil is moist and weeds are young and actively growing. For grassy weeds, apply a pre-emergence herbicide two to three weeks prior to expected germination of weed seeds.

Greenpath uses specially formulated granular fertilizer to give your lawn the nutrients it needs to flourish. The nitrogen content allows the lawn to green up while the potassium component assists in the strengthening of the lawn’s root system.

A healthy and established root system will allow for strong turf that will naturally crowd out weeds and unwanted grass types while increasing the lawn’s resistance to insect infestations and turf diseases.

Our fertilizer will supply all of the nutrients needed for the development of a thick and healthy lawn.

Top dressing is the process of applying compost, soil, or sand over the surface of your lawn. It has been performed on golf courses since the sport was invented in Scotland, but has only recently become popular on home lawns.

Good soil is living soil. That may sound like a cliche, but it’s true. One tablespoon of soil can contain billions of microorganisms. These microscopic organisms are one of the reasons we have plants and trees. In nature, soil microbes enrich soil by converting fallen leaves, limbs and other debris into nutrients plants can use. Top dressing is simply a way of restoring that balance to home lawns, building good soil and increasing soil flora.

Top dressing with core aeration helps change soil structure.

Overseeding is most effective when applied alongside top soil or core aeration. This ensures soil contact which is required for best results. Once the seeding is applied it is important to water your lawn for 10 to 14 days until you see the seeds germinate.

Overseeding is the most effective in the spring and fall when temperatures are warm and there is plenty of natural precipitation to ensure great growth.

Power Raking is great a way to remove the dead debris and crust that builds up on a lawn over winter. It is also a gentle way to remove a small amount of thatch from the lawn without causing the significant damage that dethatching can cause.

We recommend power raking in the early spring before new growth has begun. Power raking is also a great service to combine with overseeding, as it opens the lawn surface so that new seed can get better established. Power raking is a great way to thicken up bentgrass lawns. Power raking slices the surface stolons and stimulates new growth, thickening the lawn.

Power Raking can be done in the spring or fall. If you are power raking to remove winter debris it is recommended to do it before the lawn starts growing to avoid setting the lawn back during the critical spring time growth. If power raking is being combined with overseeding we recommend doing it in early spring to allow the new seedlings plenty of time to get established before the summer drought and heat. Late summer/early fall remains the optimum time for any overseeding because you avoid the summer heat and drought and the new seedlings do not have to compete with the spring germinating weeds.

Aerating your lawn annually is an important part of a healthy lawn care program. Using a machine, we remove cores of soil from the turf. Aeration will reduce soil compaction, thatch levels and will help allow air, moisture and nutrients to easily enter the soil.

Do not rake or remove the cores. Over the next few weeks after an aeration, they will naturally decompose back into the soil. As this happens the cores will release valuable nutrients back into the soil.

Combined with overseeding, core aeration is a very beneficial service, especially for thinning or damaged lawns. We strongly recommend that all lawns receive an aeration every year.

We aerate lawns in the spring and fall when the cooler temperatures and increased precipitation allow for a large core to be pulled from the ground.
